Higher prices for about everything - due to higher gas prices - or so they claim.

Yes I have little doubt that taxes will increase. Even more burden is the fact that it is forcast that the cost of natural gas will be going up about 20% in a couple of months. What more can be cut back on by the over burdened and over charged common person (politically correct here) when one cannot afford gas to get to work, food to put on the table and now , oh yes I am sure heating oil will follow the upwards trend, the ability to heat and cool their homes?

One way to help your local govt out is to set up a compost bin in your back yard so they don't have to haul away your leaves and grass clippings if you have them. Just make sure to turn it often so it does not stink and piss off your neighbors!

Local government is also asking for additional taxes later this year. With these high energy prices, good luck on that!! Voters are likely to turn down most when ask. Gas taxes are out of our control unlike municipalities.

When these governmental entities have to go back to the voters for increases, I suspect the voters will be judicious in their considerations of what increases to support, as they did yesterday in OKC, approving a bond issue to purchase the closed GM plant to lease to Tinker AFB, but rejecting the bond to build a new college building.

Personally, I think that Both Crude and distillates being on the same commodities market is the problem. Wall Street and other markets are allowing an upward snowball that will only correct itself to market fundamentals once a commodity crash has occurred. Of course, this will probably mean that hundreds will loose their life savings, but that is better than the millions that are loosing it a gallon at a time.

Hmmm, In 1960 a stamp cost four cents, now it is forty two cents; A good car cost 2,500 dollars, now it costs 30,000 dollars; a gallon of gas was about thirty cents, now it is about 3.80. Hmmm. Gasoline has been artificially low in price in the US for years. Now that we all got used to cheap and plentiful gas and trading stamps too, it now hurts to waste it like we did before. The oil companies are anything but angels, but they are not a government social agency, and they are not running an entitlement program. One quick and decent swing in the price of oil downward (because of speculators)would turn those mega profits into mega losses due to the huge amount of cash they have on the line.
With a bit of careful planning and sharing, people can cut their own personal consumption substantially, leaving more money in their pockets. Most driving today is unneccessary. There are car pools, the bus, bike and walking paths, telecommuting, and numerous other options. As long as I see folks sitting in the drive thrus at fast food places one block from home, and searching for that front row spot at the Super Mart driving in endless circles wasting gas, then the price is apparently not yet high enough for them.
Yes, everything that relies on fuel will go up in cost, but, if gasoline doubles in price, it should have a measurable, but small increase in the price of consumer goods sold in stores as a percentage of total costs. But watch them jack up the price on everything by much more than actual cost increases and use fuel prices as the excuse.
The police should start walking the beats again. Cut garbage collection down to every two weeks instead of every week or twice a week. Sell those government cars. Use more teleconferencing and cut the travel budgets 95 percent. Government needs to compensate just like a family has to. The family income does not go up, and absolutely, government spending and taxes should not be allowed to increase. They NEED to feel the pinch too instead of passing their pinch on to the already pinched public. The publuic does not have the money to pay taxes.

High gas prices effects everything I say again everything. I am seriously considering buying a small scooter for quick errands and trips to the store. At 14 MPG my SUV is sucking me dry. You can now buy a scooter for under 1500 that will go 85 and get 100mpg. Now thats gas mileage

Makes sense. As the price goes up, the sales tax on that fuel goes up. Road taxes, however, are ususally fixed on a per gallon basis..

So, let's see. The gas prices go up therefore the TAXES on gas go up. Then the government need MORE TAXES to pay for gas, so they RAISE TAXES to pay for gas. Have I got it right, now??

so... thanks Greenpeace, Sierra Club, etc... we currently have 85% of known domestic oil reserves OFF LIMITS due to environmental fanaticism and anti-capitalist nonsense... it will take years to get these reserves "on-line" if we start now... how long do you all want to wait?... until gas is $6 per gallon...?

US wouldn't need to collect individual income, sales, property taxes if they would end all corporate entitlements and subsidizes, end all handouts to those truly able to work (including 99% of all handicapped). The taxes the US collects from corporations should pay for everything, from schools to roads to bombs.
Afterall, the entire "show" is run for the benefit of the corporations.
Welcome to the wage slave planet.
