The Sydney Morning Herald -- We have been bombarded with information on alternative fuels and fuel-saving technology. All affect petrol prices, the environment, being green and global warming.

But there are so many new terms and ideas, how do we decide between diesel, petrol, LPG, hydrogen, ethanol, fuel cells, hybrid, green cars, fuel consumption, carbon dioxide, greenhouse gases and RON (who's he again)?

Which alternative is better? Or should we just sit back and wait? After all, many people are adamant hydrogen is the way forward. But that technology won't be widely available until about 2020.

As with anything you take either jump in early or you patiently wait. Those who are in early have the pros of reaping the benefits of the new technology. The cons are both in price and the possibility of that technology being scrapped or shelved. Ask those who bought Beta tapes, CD movies, and most recently HD movies since it looks like Blue Ray will be the standard in that market.

On April Fool's Day, give yourself extra time to get where you're going. Let's all be fools and drive 10 mph slower than the speed limit to protest price gouging and save fuel. If two fools drive side by side, 10 mph under the speed limit and occupy both lanes on one side of a four lane highway, people will notice.

Unfortunately the best answer will probably not be the one that is adopted. Someone will control what comes forward based on how much money can be made and not what will do the best for all concerned.

The need is fixing the dollar. To fix the dollar need to quit spending what we do not have except with credit.

Dang! It could be sooner as these high fuel prices stay high.....

the race is on... but it may not be fast enough as the edges are still rough for those who do not innovate technology efficiently going forward...........

we cannot wait until 2020 for the hydrogen technology. If we would have started 10 years earlier, then it would be almost ready. We need to be more proactive, i guess we'll never learn

NO Smart cars for two or any other quantity
NO 3 wheel vehicles
Develop existing vehicles with much higher gas mileage - 60, 70, 100 MPG.
Hydrogen is NOT the answer - uses way too much electricity to produce that hydrogen.

Produce more and different alternative fuels using NON FOOD sources.
Limit the import of OPEC oil.

Produce more renewable energy - wind, solar, tidal, hydro, etc. etc.

What does the war in Iraq have to do with alternative fuels? Illegals cost 10 times what the war has cost. If its about money, start there, then go after ethanol. Huge tax dollars go to that joke.
